Way back in 1939, during President Manuel L. Quezon’s term organized under the National Land Settlement Administration (NLSA) of the Commonwealth, when General Paulino Santos (Where the City got its name) led the relocation of Christian settlers from Luzon. From these settlers many more people came to the city coming from Luzon, Visayas and other parts of Mindanao . These started the fact that B’laans are natives of General Santos. But before the city got it’s name many names are given to this and names for the division of city’s barangays. One for it’s name is Dadiangas which is derived from the original name of a native plant consist of many thorns. The term Dadiangas is still use in the particular city. The Municipality of General Santos was converted into a city while keeping its name on July 8, 1968, upon the approval of Republic Act No. 5412. And after years of inauguration General Santos City is now one of the industrialized and urbanized Cities in the Philippines .
With the city’s natural beauty and resource of sea creatures, Fishing Industry was the first thing known by other people about GenSan. The cultivation and high population of sea creatures especially Yellow fin Tuna was the main trade on the said City. Almost all kinds of Tuna eaten by us people were come from GenSan. Because of this reason General Santos City is said to be the “Tuna Capital of the Philippines ”. Because of this acknowledgement, the city organizes and celebrates every year during the month of August to September a Tuna Festival where the talent, industry and attitude of people living here are shown. General Santos City in connection with the celebration come up with a general theme for the city which is “Magandang Gensan” which show case the Facets, Faces, and Places of the city. These proves and includes the names of well known acts and faces in show business like Melissa “Melai” Cantiveros, Gerald Anderson, Bb. Pilipinas Universe 2011 3rd runner-up Shamcey Supsup and many more. These faces and acts are the reasons while GenSan is said to be the “Home of the Champions”
